Supporting University of Michigan Students

Ann Arbor is known for its vibrant community and the prestigious University of Michigan, one of the top public universities in the nation. With a reputation for academic excellence, it's no wonder UofM students strive to succeed in an environment filled with opportunity, competition, and high expectations. However, being surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the country can sometimes feel overwhelming. The pressure to excel can create intense feelings of stress, anxiety, and self-doubt—feelings many UofM students know all too well.

If you're a UofM student, you may find yourself juggling a full course load, extracurricular activities, and social obligations. The expectations to perform academically, secure internships, or even gain research opportunities can feel like a lot to manage. Often, students experience anxiety over whether they're “doing enough” or if they’re falling behind their peers. In such a high-achieving environment, the drive for perfectionism can make it difficult to embrace any sort of balance. Students often fear that making mistakes or not keeping up will lead to falling short of their goals. This pressure may cause feelings of impostor syndrome—the belief that you aren’t as capable or intelligent as your peers, despite clear evidence of your accomplishments.

Impostor syndrome can manifest as self-doubt and intense fear of failure. Students may find themselves constantly comparing their abilities and achievements with others, leading to a constant internal narrative of "I’m not good enough." This is emotionally exhausting and can strip away joy from academic and personal pursuits. Similarly, perfectionism adds pressure to be flawless in academics and activities, leading to a cycle of overworking and burnout. You may feel like there is no room to make mistakes, which creates an enormous emotional weight to carry.

If any of this sounds like what you're experiencing, know that it doesn't have to be like this. It is possible to feel confident, calm, and connected. You don't have to struggle alone, and therapy can help you through this unique time in your life.

Social Anxiety and Pressure at UofM

The fast-paced life at UofM often extends beyond academics. Many students also face anxiety related to social interactions. Perhaps you feel anxious about meeting new people or worry excessively about what others think of you. With UofM’s bustling campus and active social scene, you might feel the pressure to attend every event or excel in leadership roles within student organizations. Yet, the more you try to juggle, the more overwhelmed and emotionally drained you might become.

Body Image and Eating Concerns

In addition to academic and social pressures, many students at UofM struggle with self-esteem and body image issues. In an environment that emphasizes health and wellness, students can sometimes develop unhealthy habits or obsessive thoughts about doing everything “right” when it comes to food, exercise, and appearance. Some students may find themselves preoccupied with eating “clean” or avoiding foods they perceive as unhealthy, leading to behaviors commonly associated with orthorexia. Others may experience distress around eating and exercise routines, feeling as though they’re constantly failing to meet their own standards or societal expectations.

If any of these experiences resonate with you, you are not alone. Many UofM students share these struggles, and it's completely valid to seek help. While UofM provides excellent campus resources, including counseling services, sometimes students need longer-term or specialized support that goes beyond short-term or group therapy models.

How I Can Help You as a UofM Student

I specialize in working with college students like you, helping you navigate the challenges that come with attending a high-achieving institution like UofM. In therapy, we’ll focus on developing tools to manage your anxiety, reduce perfectionistic thinking, and foster self-compassion—a skill that allows you to embrace your flaws and recognize your intrinsic worth, regardless of achievements or mistakes. Together, we’ll work to help you feel more grounded and confident as you navigate academics, relationships, and life transitions.

Therapy isn’t about changing who you are or simply trying to “fix” problems; it’s about helping you understand yourself better, learning to manage your emotions in healthier ways, and improving your relationships with yourself and others. My goal is to help you feel more empowered and at ease, both in your academic pursuits and your personal life.

Balancing the UofM Experience with Your Well-being

Living and studying in Ann Arbor is an incredible experience, and the University of Michigan provides world-class opportunities for growth. But it’s also important to find time for rest, reflection, and emotional health. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of school, navigating social anxiety, or experiencing difficulties with body image, therapy can be a transformative step toward finding balance and peace of mind.

While the journey of being a UofM student comes with its unique set of challenges, remember that it’s okay to seek help. Therapy offers you a safe space to explore your emotions, process stress, and develop skills to enhance your mental health. If you're ready to take the first step, I'm here to support you.
